Advantages and disadvantages of an anti lock braking system???

Advantages: Good stopping control for bad drivers.

Dis-advantages: LONGER stopping distances for everyone else!|||Exactly! Since its ice/snow 5 months a year where I live, I can't even replace my old car now till they stop requiring those anti-stop brakes.

ABS nice in rain, DISASTER on gravel/snow/ice.

brakes are for stopping, steering wheel is for steering, don't lock your brakes if you wish to steer

|||antilock brakes are great......till you try to stop fast in snow or ice......anti locks work if one wheel is still spinning so the sensors sense that and release and reapply lighter pressure on the brake pads.....when you slam on them on ice they all lock up and a-skiddin' we will go!!!!...........antilock brakes are still much better than non......they have saved more lives than airbags or seatbelts by avoiding accidents....another downside is that antilocks have been killing body shop business....good thing they invented texting while driving to keep body shop guys working steady!!!!!!|||Advantage-Self activation so you don't need to pump the brakes and will maintain correct pressure on the wheel that its needed on.

Disadvantage-Scares the crap out of you when you hear the motor so you automatically apply the brake harder fighting with the system.|||for most drivers, the quickest way to stop. For the car behind... they often hit you anyway, it seems, as you stopped so damn quickly! Not ideal for a track-day car, where the drier should be feeling the brakes lock as he leaves it until the very last split-second, 'thresh-hold braking', it is called.|||Advantages are that you are able to steer the vehicle when under heavy braking because it stops your wheels locking.Disadvantages are its expensive, prone to pick up stray electro magnetic signals so all parts to sensors have to be shielded,Exciter rings and sensors are prone to corrosion and damage, increased stopping distance in good weather conditions(by up to 25 %) and modulator flutter through the break pedal under braking. On semi trailers only one of the three axles are sensed so if middle axle locks all brakes release and if your only moving slowly you might just end up in somebodys back seat .It isnt all its cracked up to be|||Advantages are that when you need to do a panic stop, it will ensure your tires keep traction on the road, and a rolling tire stops better then a locked up one. The only disadvantages would be that ABD repair can sometimes be expensive, other then that, you only worry about the disadvantages if you are performing advanced driving techniquies in which it would be necessary to lock up certain wheels at certain times (to all the kids who read this: this doesn't mean you, I mean trained professionals who KNOW what theya re doing, not a kid who is being stupid because he is finaly able to drive). ABS are a great safety feature that help save lives.|||i have noticed sometimes on ice they change from anti lock to anti stop brakes!|||mine judders far too much, even at about 40mph and my large chest shakes all over the place. It's embarassing when I have passengers in the car.|||There are no disadvantages only advantages.|||They don't always stop you faster, the idea of ABS is to maintain steering control whilst applying the brakes hard.

All that is happening is instead of the brake pads clamping the discs and locking the wheel, the brakes are pulsing on and off very fast. This is the sensation you can feel on the brake pedal.

Advantages: Allows you to maintain steering control under heavy braking

Disadvantages: Another thing to go wrong with your car.|||In R/L

Advantages

~ An attempt to compensate for driver error - allows novice drivers to incorrectly slam on the brakes w/minimum wheel lockup/vehicle skidding in panic stop situations.

~ Shortens stopping distances in some, but not all, instances.

Disadvantages

~ Severely lengthens stopping distances on most all road except smooth clean surfaces especially washboard, loose gravel, potholes.

aka 'just a normal road down here'

This can occur in normal as well as panic brake applications.

~ Increases costs of new vehicles

~ Increases maintenance costs

~ May contribute to driver confidence exceeding their ability (over confidence)|||For the average driver, there are only advantages.

For professional drivers, ABS does not allow you to lock the tires, which, under some road conditions, is the fastest way to stop a vehicle.|||Anti lock= Control under braking

the other= lose control in an emergency unless you're a rally driver|||when you are normally braking the abs doesn't come into effect the only time the ABS is properly activated is under heavy breaking.. the breaks basically engage and disengage rapidly which can sometimes cause juddering. the correct technique for heavy breaking with ABS is to pump the brake this will pull the vehicle up faster than simply pressing the brake hard personally not a fan and have removed from most of my cars that i use on track days and most race cars do not use the system as it will lengthen the breaking distance|||advantage is stops u quick and straighter problems..juddering..my chev s 10....che abs lite went on..got new sensor 125 dollars..a few months later check abs lite goes on another 125 dollars..i t was grabbing brakes on and off at 1 to 10 mph... i pulled fuse and its fine...iv been driving 40 years without abs and know not to slam brakes on and close my eyes...|||I can only think of advantages|||Advantages:

You dont die.

Disadvantages:

No Breaking induced skid marks

Harder for drifting.|||For me ABS is a back up system which I wouldn't be without.

In ten years of driving cars with ABS I have only activated the system once, and that was intentional.

I'm an old school profession driver I know how to stop a vehicle quickly without locking the front wheels.
